Sociolinguistic Competence of a Trilingual at Age Five

Being Trilingual is no longer a strange phenomenon as it may have been sometime back. In fact, in urban settings Kenya, children are learning English third language (L3) rather than second (L2). Canale and Swain (1980) propose that communicative competence comprises four competencies, namely: Linguistic, Sociolinguistic, Strategic, Discourse competencies Of concern this study the sociolinguistic of trilingual at age five. Purposive sampling snowballing were used to select six children: three boys girls. Data collected through conversational technique where prompted express themselves languages: English, Kiswahili, their Mother Tongue. It was found exhibited main competencies: code-mixing, use colloquial politeness forms. Lexical code-mixing commonest code-mixed two languages utterances. The findings reveal Kenyan on path trilingualism five, affirms current education policy, which encourages different levels education. These relevant policymakers today future.
